When do we say the first and when the second?

avoir l'habitude -- to be in the habit of...
s'habituer à -- to become used to...
J'ai l'habitude de me brosser les dents. -- I am used to brushing my teeth.
Je me suis habitué à me brosser les dents. -- I got used to brushing my teeth.
