What is the actual rule? Seems like we just memorize...

It feels like from looking at the other site, you use jouer with sports that involve moving a ball or small object of some kind.

Is this the pattern?

Only exception seems to be tennis which uses faire here but on the sister site it's paired with jouer, so thats odd
