what about the " avoir besoin de"?
This question relates to:French lesson "Using lui/leur = him or her/them (French Indirect Object Pronouns)"

It depends on whatever following the phrase "avoir besoin de" + ....
If followed by thing/object --> it's "EN"
ex: J'ai besoin de vacances --> J'en ai besoin.
If followed by a person masculin --> it's "LUI" (stress pronoun)
ex: J'ai besoin de Paul --> J'ai besoin de lui.
If followed by a person feminine --> it's "ELLE" (stress pronoun)
ex: J'ai besoin de ma mère --> J'ai besoin d'elle.
It will never be replaced by "le or la" because "avoir besoin de" is not a direct object pronoun case. Hope this helps !
