Vouloir présent subjonctif

Vouloir présent subjonctif

It seems illogical that the French have chosen to say: « Que nous voulions » and « Que vous vouliez » (which are the same as l’imparfait) instead of « Que nous veuillons » and « Que vous veuillez » which IMO would fit in much better with the subjunctive theme.

Bonjour Elaine,

It's a fair point! However, even if it looks "illogical", it is a result of historical phonological evolution: the verb vouloir originally had distinct forms for different persons in Latin and Old French. Over time, it evolved with two different stems. Quite a few French verbs follow this pattern (i.e. the "nous/vous" form):

que nous prenions / que nous allions / que vous veniez

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !
