'que les gens me donnent' - was the answer for 'have been giving me'. I thought that the French here meant (in your answer) - 'that the people 'are' giving me'.

French does not have an equivalent of the present perfect continuous tense, so it will be translated either by the passé composé or the present tense as appropriate. In this case I assume the sentence will use depuis, so it should be the present.
