Use of aller gagner instead of future tense

Why does one use allons gagner instead of gagnerons (future tense)?  What determines which is better?

This is le futur proche. It is used just, like its English correspondence, for events in the more immediate future.

I shall win. -- Je gagnerai.
I am going to win. -- Je vais gagner.
