“Tu es apparue comme un ange”

For this to be correct, doesn’t the subject have to be female? I answered that only “Tu as apparu comme un ange” was the only correct answer because I couldn’t assume that the sub just was female

Bonjour Julie,

You're right that in "Tu es apparue comme un ange" the subject has to be feminine. In such as a sentence, the gender of the subject cannot always be stated, unless you have a clear context. However, this answer is grammatically correct too.

Tu es venue me voir = You came to see me

Tu es apparue soudainement = You appeared suddenly

-> subject's gender = feminine

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !

Bonjour Julie,

https://www.dictionnaire-academie.fr/article/A9A2169

"APPARAÎTRE

 conjugaison ◇ verbe intransitif Conjugaison :(se conjugue comme Connaître ; aux temps composés s’emploie surtout avec l’auxiliaire être, plus rarement avec l’auxiliaire avoir)."

Although either auxiliary is possible, the above points out that avoir useage is most rare.

Does this point deal with your concern?

Bonne journée

Jim
