Sur vs dans

I thought that with streets , roads we used the preposition Dan’s... then why are we using sur for chemin?

Hi Manpreet kaur,

Interesting point.

It is the case that within the total environment (of a street) dans in used.

On a path in the countryside then it seems most appropriate to express the fact that you are walking upon a surface in an open-air situation therefore "sur".

There is more here:

Dans/sur/sous/devant/derrière/entre = in/on top of/under/in front of/behind/between (French Prepositions of Location)

Hope that this will help.

Jim
