Could you explain the difference between 'crayon', 'crayon à papier' and 'crayon gris'? I do not draw, so I was unfamiliar with the latter two. Are the latter two used primarily in the context of art?

Subtlety re pencil
This question relates to:French writing exercise "A great drawing class"
Asked 5 days ago
Bonjour Frank,
In French, "un crayon" is used as a general term to refer to various types of pencils while "un crayon à/de/x papier" and "un crayon gris" are used in a more artistic context, such as the exercise above.
I hope this is helpful.
Bonne journée !

Interestingly, the exercise later implies she uses coloured pencils.
