Regarding asking one's name

Can anyone let me know what is the correct meaning of comment vous vous appelez?

Is it you call yourself... or your name is...

And, why do we use comment vous vous appelez? instead of Quel est votre nom?. and what's the difference between these two?

Salut Shakthi,

As per the lesson  --  if we say "How do you call yourself?" This form of words leaves open the possibility that the person you are addressing may prefer to use (call themselves) a name that is not their "birth name".

If on the other hand, the question is direct "What is your name?" then the ambiguity is removed.

Hope this helps.

Bonne continuation

Jim
