Just as "the people" is plural in English, 'les gens' is plural in French.

Can't find the example from the lesson, but as 'on' was used in French I assume this was a use in the general sense of 'we the people' or 'people'. 'On' takes the singular third person conjugation of the verb regardless. (It does have different adjectival agreement according to context).

On can mean either we/one/people (French Subject Pronouns)

Nous vs on to say "we" in French (French Subject Pronouns)

Hi Jody,

To elect  --> élire, so to write "people elect the prime minister" --> Les gens élisent ...

Hope this helps.

Jim
