Since the speaker/narrator is clearly a women, wouldn't the sentence be...

"et je m'étais préparée une journée aux petits oignons." ???

That's a good point, but the answer is still: no, préparé is correct, even if the speaker is a woman.

The explanation is that the true COD in this sentence is une journée and NOT me (this being a reflexive pronoun). Since the COD comes after the participle, the participle remains in the male form.

Les nuages se sont écartés. Here the COD "se" is before the participle.
