Est-ce que c'est simplement une question de niveau?
Pourquoi pas dire "franchir le premier pas"?

Bonjour Aaron,
‘Faire le premier pas’ is definitely the right expression in this context. ‘Franchir’ has more a meaning of ‘crossing over something’.
Je franchis le seuil de ta maison = I cross the threshold of your house.
Ils franchissent un obstacle = they go over an obstacle.
Il a franchi la ligne d’arrivée = he crossed the finish line.
Vous avez franchi le premier pas pour devenir astronaute = you made the first step to become an astronaut
I hope this is helpful.
Bonne journée !
