I've seen both of these as phrases on Kwiziq:
Plus je regarde la télévision...Plus je mange du chocolat... (The more I eat chocolate...)
When do we use the article (la, le) vs de la and du. Specifically, why isn't "Plus je mange le chocolat" correct here?

I think the answer to this question revolves around the category of noun type.
Is the noun in question a "count" or "noncount" noun?

Chocolate is countable / tangible and you are not wanting to eat all of the chocolate in the world!
You are wanting to eat "some" chocolate therefore we have to write du -- partitive article.
