Why is fut used in the above, rather than était.To the best of my knowledge, we have not been introduced to the Historic?

Le chevalier fut amené devant le roi de cette contrée par les gardes.

The examples serve to demonstrate how to construct passive voice in all the simple tenses. The passé simple is just one of those tenses. You'll notice that the imperfect (était) is demonstrated in another example already.
