I understand that what was wanted was, « Rien ne s’est passé », and that this is correct. But is it not also correct to say « Il ne s’est rien passé »? (I think I got this alternative from the Pimsleur program.)

Bonjour Wes,

You are right that 'il ne s'est rien passé' and 'rien ne s'est passé' are both identical in meaning. However, the lesson is focusing on sentences starting with 'Personne ne... - Rien ne...' Thus the expected answer was 'Rien ne...'
