Nasal Vowels - IN

I've been pronouncing the nasal vowel "IN" as "EN" as pronounced in "souvent" this whole time. Is it eh(n)? If so is it pronounced that way in every scenario?

Bonjour Avasies,

- Nasal vowels /ɛ̃/ (IN) can be written as follows:

du pain = some bread  -  impossibleimpossible  -  aucun = none du vin some wine  -  ancien old  -  une ceinture = a belt

- Nasal vowels /ã/ (EN) can be written as follows:

souvent = often un pantalon = a pair of trousers  -  le ventre = the belly  du jambon = some ham  - le centre the centre

Also, I looked at your profile and you have not taken the sorter test yet or tried any of our lessons or exercises. It would help our Kwizbot assess your level and therefore create a studyplan fitting your language level. You will then be able to access lesson content to your language level and test your knowledge accordingly.

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !

Hi Avasies,

Go here     https://www.wordreference.com/fren/en

Insert "in" English word and click on the "loudspeaker" symbol  --  you will hear the pronunciation.

Then insert "en" French and repeat the above procedure to hear the pronunciation.

There is quite a distinct difference  --  try it   --  you will hear immediately what I mean.

Hope this helps.

Jim
