La fois dernière or la dernière fois

Question

Please help!  I'm confused!  Why is "la fois dernière" correct in this question, when there is a clause after the phrase "last time"? Thanks 😊

When last time is followed by a clause (last time I saw you), you can only use la dernière fois, never la fois dernière.
Tu étais encore avec Stéphane la fois dernière.You were still with Stéphane last time.
Tu étais encore avec Stéphane la dernière fois.You were still with Stéphane last time.
Tu étais encore avec Stéphane la dernière fois que je t'ai vue.You were still with Stéphane last time I saw you.

David, I can see why this could confuse. 
The example is actually 'last time' as a stand alone phrase, just placed at beginning of the sentence rather than at the end : 
"Henri came to see me last time" is equivalent to "Last time, Henri came to see me" and is not quite the same as "Henri came to see me the last time that I saw him" 
The lesson would be more complete by indicating that the restriction is that you cannot use 'la fois dernière followed by a relative (or related) clause'. 
Of course 'la dernière fois' is correct in either case as well as for 'final time', and perhaps is a safer bet to stay with as a non-native speaker ?
