lesson said english counties ending in shire were male, so i thought kent was feminine and got marked wrong. how do we learn which counties are male/female?

Carol, I think the specific mention of the "-shire" counties being masculine is because they end in "e" and may otherwise be expected to be feminine. Most English counties are masculine, and hold their 'English' name, including "le Kent" - but there are a few exceptions (of course). See external link:
