In the second sentence, why is "cher" masculine, and not feminine.

...it was more expensive than usual. -- ...c'était plus cher que d'habitude.

The hint says that "it was" is to be treated as a general statement and not referring to the letter. In the case, where c'était refers to a general idea rather than a specific object, you use the masculine gender by default.

Thanks.  I was wondering what "c'etait" referred to.
