The only time polite people talk about appearances is when they are describing a person wanted by police for a crime.
It is a teaching exercise. However, in general, the French are not as sensitive as some, and non-malicious humour at their own or other’s ‘expense’ is taken as it is meant - friendly banter amongst friends.
