Bonjour Gary,

Je porte des vêtements colorés -> I wear (some) colourful clothes (in the general sense)

Je porte les vêtements colorés  -> I wear (all of them / the) colourful clothes (being very specific as in "I'm wearing the clothes that someone brought over" for example )

"I prefer dark clothes" can be translated by both following options here:

Je préfère les habits sombres -> les = generalising - all of them

Je préfère des habits sombres -> des = some - it could be replaced by "un" as "des" is an indefinite plural article

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !
