In French, it is quite common to use the singular for a general statement where, in English, the plural is used, e.g.:

La femme est encore perçue comme un objet sexuel. -- Women (lit. the woman) are still perceived as sexual objects.

The sentence you quote follows the same pattern: advent calendars (in general) are referred to in the singular.
