The recommended translation of 'It [the year] started with the biggest heartache of my life' is 'Elle a commencé avec la plus grosse peine de cœur de ma vie'.
Is there a reason why 'avec' is preferred over 'par' in this sentence?

Bonjour Tom,
It has become grammatically correct to use "avec". However, you are right that "le bon usage" is to use "par" (as stated in this previous reply: Commencer avec ou commencer par)
We have now added "par" as a correct alternative.
I hope this is helpful.
Bonne journée !
