can we use derrière instead of arrière?

E.g. why not say Oui maman, il est sur la plage derrière ?

arrière -- at the back
derrière -- behind

Je suis derrière la voiture. -- I am behind the car.
Je suis à l'arrière de la voiture. -- I am in the rear of the car.
