Bien que/quoique + the subjunctive mood (Le Subjonctif) = although/though in French

To introduce a concession with although/though in French, you can use these two conjunctions followed by a verb in Mode subjonctif.

Using "bien que / quoique" with Mode subjonctif in French

Bien que = although/though

Elle ne le fait pas, bien qu'elle le puisse. She isn't doing it, although she could.

Bien que l'on ne s'entende pas, c'est quand même mon frère !Although we don't get along, he's still my brother!

Je suis en retard bien que je sois parti à l'heure.I'm late even though I left on time.

Bien qu'il ne soit pas fatigué, il devrait aller se coucher.Even though he is not tired, he should go to bed.

To express although/though in French, you use:

bien que + Mode subjonctif

ATTENTION:

Do not confuse bien que (although) with expressions using bien followed by que (that):

J'aimerais bien que tu fasses le petit-déjeuner.I would like you to make breakfast.

-> Here it's the expression aimer bien (to like) followed by que.

Quoique = although/even though

To express although/(even) though in French, you can also use:

quoique + Mode subjonctif
Elle ne le fait pas, quoiqu'elle le puisse. She isn't doing it, although she could.

Quoique je veuille venir, mes parents n'accepteront jamais.Though I want to come, my parents will never say yes.

Quoique le prix ait augmenté, ça vaut quand même la peine de l'acheter.Even though the price has gone up, it's still worth buying it.

Je te souhaite de réussir, quoique cela me paraisse difficile.I wish you success [lit: I wish you to succeed], although that seems difficult to me.

Note that quoique is a bit more antiquated in this context than bien que, and therefore less common.

ATTENTION:

Do not confuse quoique (although) with the two-word expression quoi que (whatever [one does]), also followed by Mode subjonctif:

Quoi qu'il fasse, ne bouge pas d'un poil !Whatever he does, don't move an inch!

Quoi que vous pensiez, gardez-le pour vous !Whatever you're thinking, keep it to yourself!
