Le bord de mer … is that correct? Why isn’t it le bord de la mer?

le bord de mer -- seashore / seaside
le bord de la mer -- the shore of the sea

Bonjour Karen,

To supplement Chris' great answer, here is a third example:

le bord de la mer Méditerranée / Baltique = the shore of the Mediterranean / Baltic sea

-> the definite article 'la' is included as it specifies which sea one is talking about

Also, see link here on a similar topic: the-definite-article-or-not

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !

Le maillot de bain

Is there a difference between a swimsuit for a boy and a swimsuit for a girl?  For example in English boys wear swim shorts or swim trunks is there a separate word for that in French? Thanks

Hi Annissa,

Well, maillot de bain would be used to describe a generic swimsuit, a garment that men, women, or children would wear to go swimming.

If you wanted to talk about a speedo I would use -

slip de bain

A boy could wear a boxer/ short de bain also.

Take a look at the following page from a well-known catalogue -

https://www.vertbaudet.fr/garcon/maillot-de-bain.htm

Hope this helps!

The Seaside in French

How do you say this in french:

'Last year, I went to Italy on holiday, with my family and we stayed at a hotel. We went to a beach and swam in the sea. We played in the sand, together, and built a large sandcastle. In the afternoons, we visited monuments and went to churches. For dinner, we always ate pizza and it was delicious. It was amazing!'
