After a first round which turned out to be tight though predictable, Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen will be facing each other for the second round. The incumbent president, who had made his candidacy official at the last minute, and who had repeatedly refused to debate the other candidates, benefited from what French people call "the tactical vote", though his lead over his direct rival was narrower than expected. After having already faced Macron in similar circumstances five years ago, Marine Le Pen confirms the National Rally's place as the second party in France, as well as the indisputable rise in popularity of far-right ideas, which newcomer Eric Zemmour's 7% is only consolidating. The second round of the 2022 presidential election will take place on April 24.
